The postgame arrogance displayed by Notre Dame’s coach after the Irish’s 28-27 loss to Tulsa was astounding. He made a stupefying play call that cost his team a victory by having backup QB Tommy Rees — a true freshman — try a pass into the end zone with 42 seconds left from the Tulsa 19-yard line. It was intercepted, meaning placekicker David Ruffer — 18-for-18 in his career — never got a chance at the winner. One or two runs to the middle of the field. That’s all Kelly needed to call. Instead, he let his arrogance get the best of him. If that wasn’t bad enough, he then tried to defend the indefensible. Memo to Kelly: This is not Grand Valley State.
