When to fire a coach can be toughest decision

Ron Mason remembers that sad day in 2002. The former Michigan State athletic director had gone to Ann Arbor to watch Michigan rout his Spartans 49-3. Afterward, embattled coach Bobby Williams, who had dropped to 3-6 in his third year and into last place in the Big Ten, was asked if he had lost his team.

He said, “I don’t know.” Mason saw the quote.
“That jumped at me right away,” said Mason, now retired. “They asked me, ‘Do you think Bobby lost the team?’ I said, ‘If he doesn’t know, who does?’ ”
Two days after the game, Mason fired him.
