Blogger roundtable: Julio Jones is the Crimson Tide’s MVP so far
While some of the credit goes to a depleted and undisciplined Tennessee team, Alabama’s offense and defense executed with enough precision to indicate that there is still much untapped potential in this team. It was good to see redshirt-freshman quarterback AJ McCarron get some reps (and look pretty good doing them) without anyone being able to say that he needs to be starting over the veteran signal caller Greg McElroy.
The special teams have been a pleasant surprise. These are much improved coverage units from last season and Marquis Maze seems poised to break a long return at any moment. The running backs were running hard into bigger holes created by what seems to be an improving offensive line. McElroy showed some touch that he had seemed to have lost and, most encouragingly, seems to have learned to throw the ball away rather than hold it until he’s sacked.
It would be hard to name a MVP at this point. Unlike our neighbors to the southeast, there is not one super player (or two) that you could point to and say, “without them, the team just doesn’t go.” Julio Jones would have to be a candidate. No one on the team has played as well as he has up to this point but there seems to be a feeling that there are a few others who will have something to say as the season winds down.
