Time for Schools to Pay Mouths That Feed Them Megabucks
Opponents of paying players cling to three main arguments. Please allow me to pry them loose.
1. Schools can’t afford it.
Sure enough, an NCAA survey showed only 25 of the 119 Football Bowl Subdivision programs made money in the 2008-09 school year. That’s because every sport except football, basketball (and in exceedingly rare cases, women’s basketball) are fiscal black holes.
The more salient fact is in conferences that automatically qualify for the BCS, 61 of 66 programs made money on football. The average take was $8.8 million.
On the ridiculous end, Ohio State grossed $68.19 million. Florida generated $66.15 million. Texas made $65 million in profit.
Colt McCoy received a jockstrap and free dental.
