Coach Calipari addresses academics, athletics at Kentucky forum
That was part of the message the University of Kentucky men’s basketball coach delivered during a 1¼-hour appearance at a forum on academics and athletics Tuesday on the UK campus.
About 70 people attended, and they listened as moderator Joseph L. Fink III, UK’s faculty athletics representative to the Southeastern Conference and the NCAA, discussed a range of topics with the coach, many of them unrelated to academics.
Calipari talked about nonconference scheduling, the challenges of recruiting and coaching players raised in today’s information age and the resources available to the head coach at UK, which employs a full-time staff to oversee the academic development of its athletes
He cited former Memphis standout Joey Dorsey and current UK guard DeAndre Liggins as players who struggled but fought to make that adjustment.
“For me, those kids are the challenge that you take the most pride in,” Calipari said.
