Bean: Coaching pushes area talent to top

Southwest Alabama and metro Mobile in particular will be well represented in the 2010 Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic.

The 40-player roster, released last week by the AHSAA, features 14 players from southwest Alabama, including three from Foley and two apiece from Vigor, Davidson and Spanish Fort.

Spencer Region, Cullman: The massive lineman’s summer flip-flop from Alabama to Auburn and then to uncommitted status left more questions than answers about this young man.

Chris Landrum, Sweet Water: The Auburn commitment would surely have been the lone 1A member of the team, but a broken ankle in the season opener likely caused him to be left off the roster.

Collins Moore, Bob Jones: An Ole Miss commitment, Moore is not as highly regarded as Vigor’s Marvin Shinn, Leroy’s Sammie Coates, Hoover’s Jaylen Denson or Woodson. He simply got caught in a numbers game.

E.J. May, McGill-Toolen: Blame the numbers game for May getting left off the roster because it’s a banner year in the state for defensive backs. All of the big names, including Erique Florence, the state’s No. 1 prospect, are slated to play in the game.
