The rankings system uses a formula that equally weighs the rankings from the USA Today coaches’ poll and a compilation of available computer ratings. The SEC ranked No. 1 in both.
Overall, the Big Ten was No. 2, the Big 12 No. 3, the Pac-10 No. 4 and the Mountain West No. 5.
The SEC has already lost three nonconference games — Ole Miss to Jacksonville State, Vanderbilt to Northwestern and Tennessee to Oregon. However, Alabama’s convincing win over Penn State helped keep the SEC on top.
