A news conference will be held at 2:30 p.m. on today, Monday, August 9, 2010, at 2:30 p.m., in Room 216 of the state Capitol, to discuss a series of 12 open meetings to be held across the state by the Standing Joint Legislative Committee on Reapportionment and Redistricting to gather citizen input before they begin the process of creating new Legislative and Congressional districts.
Mississippians are asked to attend the meetings and voice their opinions before redistricting begins early in 2011, following the state’s receipt of federal Census data to be used in the process of creating new districts based upon population shifts.
State Senator Terry Burton, Chairman of the Congressional Redistricting Committee, Elections Committee and the Legislative Reapportionment Committee, said citizen input was crucial.
“It’s imperative that the public have a chance to give us their view as we create the Senate and the House legislative districts and the Congressional districts next year as is required by law after each Census,” Burton said.
