Nonprofits could lose tax-exempt standing
Nearly 3,000 nonprofit organizations in Mississippi could be at risk because they did not file required tax returns for 2007, 2008 and 2009.
The Internal Revenue Service is giving nonprofits across the country until Oct. 15 to comply with the requirement and keep their tax-exempt status.
Most are small, community-based groups such as civic clubs, faith-based associations and fraternal organizations.
“These groups do great work in communities across the United States and are vital to the vibrancy of our nation,” IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman said Monday in a statement. “The last thing we want to do here at the IRS is have these groups lose their tax-exempt status because they haven’t filed a short, simple form.”
