CL – Congressional sessions prevents incumbants from speaking at Neshoba

Because of the convergence of the schedule of the fair and the current session of Congress, incumbent congressmen will be on Capitol Hill rather than under the old oaks on Founder’s Square while their opponents are delivering speeches.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing. U.S. Reps. Travis Childers, D-1st, Bennie Thompson, D-2nd, Gregg Harper, R-3rd, and Gene Taylor, D-4th, all have the power of incumbency, seniority and larger campaign war chests than their opponents. The advantages of incumbency are enormous.

But the Neshoba County Fair this year has afforded all the challengers – major party and third party alike – an opportunity to speak in the state’s brightest media spotlight on the state’s most hallowed political stump.

Voters – both those on the fairgrounds and those who get media reports across the state – will get a chance to hear from some of these candidates for perhaps the first time.
