Forrest County to charge Hattiesburg more to house prisoners

HATTIESBURG -The Forrest County Board of Supervisors has notified the city it is increasing the amount of money it charges to hold Hattiesburg prisoners from $32 to $35 per day, officials said.

The increase is expected to generate approximately $40,000, jail officials said.

City officials said Monday they paid the county nearly $250,000 to house inmates in the county’s downtown jail facility in the first six months of this year.

“We’ve been doing some calculations on what it actually costs to run the jail so we could come up with a more appropriate figure,” David Miller, the supervisors’ attorney, said of the fee increase.

County officials said actual housing costs are around $40 a day per inmate. The board wants to get other agencies and municipalities that use the county jail closer to that figure.
