5. The loss to Alabama still stings: “It’s threefold, I think. I was proud of Texas and the kids to get back to a second national championship in five years after a long dry spell. And we had a chance to be in a third one in five years. So you feel good about the program and consistency. Second, I was so proud that we were voted second even after the ballgame. I thought, ‘A great compliment to kids that they keep fighting against great odds.’ Third, I thought the fact that one of the best players that didn’t play cheapened the game a little bit. I hated that. I hated it for us, I hated it for Alabama. I hated it for football fans because the game was so good in ’05 against USC. It was a classic.
