Bigger picture, Texas will remain the most desired property in the game. As long as other conferences perceive the Big 12 as weakened—and they will for the foreseeable future—they will pursue the Longhorns. And since UT officials, especially president Bill Powers, investigated other options in 2010, there’s little reason they won’t again in 2020. The Pac-10, Big Ten and even the SEC will remain on the trail.
In other words, this issue won’t die. There might be an imminent pause in the realignment/expansion derby, but it’s far from permanent. College football’s popularity will grow, meaning televising its games will grow more expensive. The money will prove too great for things to remain the same for long.
