HICKORY, Miss. — Legislation to rename the Hickory, Miss., Post Office for a Mississippi soldier who died in Afghanistan is on its way to President Obama.
U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper, the bill’s sponsor, says the legislation was passed by the Senate on Tuesday.
The proposal by the Mississippi Republican would name the post office for Sgt. Matthew L. Ingram, a 25-year-old Newton County native who died in August 2009, from wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.
Harper’s bill was co-sponsored by Mississippi Democrats Travis Childers, Gene Taylor and Bennie Thompson.
