Barbour makes crack about Blumenthal’s made-up war service

The controversy surrounding Attorney General Richard Blumenthal’s statements about service in the Vietnam War, unveiled in a New York Times story Monday night, dominated the conversation at the annual Prescott Bush Awards Dinner at the Stamford Plaza.

“The running joke today is that Jane Fonda spent more time in Vietnam than Dick Blumenthal,” State Republican Party Chairman Chris Healy said to laughs from the crowd.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, the event’s featured speaker, also didn’t hesitate to take a jab at the Greenwich Democrat, the leading contender for his party’s nomination for U.S. Senate.

“In my state we call the attorney general “general,” said Barbour, who currently serves as the chairman of the Republican Governors Association, in his Southern drawl. “But we never have called him Mr. Saigon.”

In his address, Barbour, who was elected chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1993, said the political environment for the GOP is better than 15 years ago. But Barbour stressed that a big victory in November is not a foregone conclusion, noting that many Democrats are starting to run on more moderate platforms.

“I wish I could look you in the eye and tell you it’s inevitable … but it isn’t,” Barbour said.”
