Considering expansion will be decided at the level of university presidents and not athletic departments, this appears to be a significant piece of the puzzle. The Big Ten has five schools — Northwestern, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin and Penn State — ranked among the top 50 in the country by U.S. News & World Report. All 11 are in the top 71, counting ties.
