Possible Big Ten expansion looms over BCS meeting

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — When conference commissioners convened for the Bowl Championship Series meetings Tuesday at the Royal Palms Resort, the prospect of Big Ten expansion was thought to be looming like an anvil over the heads of those with institutions that may be targeted by the Big Ten.

But such heaviness hardly was evident in Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe, who playfully wondered whether a question about expansion was about the conference over which he presides — or his waistline.

And he joked that his attempts to make Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany state his intentions had gone for naught.

“I tried him in a headlock,” Beebe said “but he’s a tough guy.”
