WTVA – Governor Barbour receives warning letter telling him to step down

Governor Barbour receives warning letter

JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) — WTVA.com has confirmed Governor Haley Barbour’s office received a letter from an anti-government group calling for him to step down from office or be removed.

A spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety tells WTVA.com the governor received the letter this week and it is now working with the FBI to investigate the group that sent it.

As of Wednesday, more than 30 governors had received the letters from a group calling itself Guardians of the free Republics.

Its Web site says it wants to “restore America” by peacefully dismantling parts of the government.

The FBI expects all 50 governors will eventually receive letters from the group and is warning police that although the letters don’t contain threats of violence, it’s possible the message could incite others to commit violent acts.

Governor’s Barbour’s office declined to comment about the letter saying it does not talk about security matters.
