Prom or no prom for lesbian teen?

FULTON — Constance McMillen, the lesbian teen who challenged her school’s policy against same-sex prom dates, still is hoping to attend her prom Friday night.

She’s just not sure whether there will be one or whether she will be welcome.

“It would be helpful to get confirmation on what is happening,” said American Civil Liberties Union attorney Christine Sun, who is representing the 18-year-old in her federal lawsuit against Itawamba County Agricultural High School officials.

The county school board announced its decision March 10 to cancel the school-sponsored dance after McMillen asked the school to allow her to attend it with her girlfriend and to wear a tuxedo. A parent-sponsored prom organized in the wake of that decision was canceled this week after McMillen attempted to purchase a ticket.

On Tuesday afternoon, a group of parents set up in the parking lot at First Baptist Church and handed out cash refunds to students and parents.

“There are a lot of people involved, and they don’t want to get sued,” said Lori Byrd, who served on the parent organizing committee.
