Desoto Times – Split session a good idea

Split session a good idea

Our conversation of a few weeks ago with Sen. Merle Flowers, R-Olive Branch, resonated after this week’s move by house members to vote down a resolution to extend their session.

In the earlier conversation, Flowers suggested the house and senate should convene in March to discuss the education and public safety portions of the budget, adjourn the session until June and then reconvene to finish a budget based on a better grasp of financial collections and projections.

We think Flowers’ idea has great merit. It may play out in actuality this year and be a good way to judge its effectiveness.

The two-session legislative meetings would go a long way to better attributing state funds to their correct place in the budgeting process.

This approach to budgeting our state funds would work in good times and bad.
