Miss. House declines recess to await word on funds

JACKSON — House members killed legislation Tuesday that would have extended the legislative session, with a three-week recess at no additional cost to taxpayers, while awaiting word from Congress on an additional $187 million in Medicaid money.

The extra Medicaid funds, part of legislation under consideration in the U.S. House of Representatives, would free up $187 million to fill Mississippi budget holes, mainly in money for K-12 education.

Supporters were trying late Tuesday to round up five additional votes to resurrect the measure for another vote today.

The extension legislation, which needed a two-thirds vote in the 122-member Mississippi House, failed on a vote of 76-45.
