Jackson councilman campaigns for circuit judge seat

Jackson City Councilman Jeff Weill announced today he is running for Hinds County Circuit Court judge to replace retiring Judge Swan Yerger.

Weill made his announcement surrounded by friends and family at the Willie Morris Library in northeast Jackson.

“I believe my 28 years of experience as a lawyer, a state court prosecutor, a criminal investigator, a mediator and a city councilman have well prepared me to seek this position,” he said.

Weill, who turns 53 this week, was elected to the Ward 1 seat on the council in August 2007 in a special election to replace retiring Councilman Ben Allen. He won re-election in an uncontested election last spring.

He is the lone Republican serving in city government, although judicial races are non-partisan.
