Urban Meyer watch…Where’s Waldo now?
This could be fun. With Urban Meyer refining his espionage skills lately by practicing the art of incognito, the only time we’ve seen Meyer since the Sugar Bowl was a Gators basketball game — for less than a half. A cop escorted him out before halftime to avoid interviews.
Where will he pop up next? Anywhere before National Signing Day on Feb. 3?
There’s a UF softball charity event Jan. 30 and next week’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., where Meyer could appear for a day to support Tim Tebow. Lots of college coaches attend. But then again, Meyer didn’t show up at the recent AFCA Convention where most prominent head coaches showed their face. Looks like the scale-back plan already is in place, at least when it comes to appearances.
Spokesman Steve McClain said Meyer has not committed to either the charity event or the Senior Bowl. One thing we do know is that Meyer still frequents Ballyhoo’s Grill, his favorite restaurant in Gainesville. A Ballyhoo’s employee said Meyer has visited the establishment at least twice since the new year. Maybe he had a Tim Teroll sushi roll.
Florida’s priority is playing recruiting defense to preserve the country’s top signing class into early February. At this point, Meyer is not expected to travel to visit recruits, though that could change when the signing period heats up in the final days.
While the rest of the staff is out recruiting this week, Meyer left The Swamp at around 5 p.m. Wednesday.
One assistant joked that Meyer can utilize some online video recruiting tools. Meyer has been unavailable for comment, and McClain said he doesn’t know details of Meyer’s plans other than he’s “actively” recruiting.
“All signs are extremely encouraging that Urban will be back,” defensive line coach Dan McCarney said. “He is continuing to lead our amazing program.”
