Pickering due in court at 1 over soccer scuffle

By: Magnolia Tribune - January 19, 2010

Trial in soccer scuffle today – Pickering, coach face assault charges following dispute

A former congressman and a youth soccer coach are scheduled to meet in Madison Municipal Court at 1 p.m. today to face simple assault charges for their involvement in a scuffle at a soccer match last month.

Former 3rd District Rep. Chip Pickering wanted to settle the dispute privately with youth soccer coach Chris Hester rather than go to court, but that plan had not panned out as of Monday afternoon.

The two struggled after a youth soccer match at Liberty Park in Madison on Dec. 6.

Pickering is accused of confronting Hester about the way he treated Pickering’s son, who played on the opposing team. Arrest warrants later were issued for both, who posted $500 bonds.
