Ed officials gearing up for overhauls
Within 90 days, the state Department of Education will be restructured. Some employees will have different jobs, but protecting classroom integrity will remain a priority.
So says Tom Burnham, who began his second stint as Mississippi’s superintendent of education this month.
Burnham, 63, realizes he faces some major issues, including proposed school-district consolidations and historic funding cuts.
The current state budget revenue shortfall and cuts to K-12 “was not created by a single act, by a single individual,” Burnham said.
