Jon Gruden turns down Tennessee’s advances

Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton reached out to former NFL coach Jon Gruden late Tuesday night but was turned down, a source close to the situation told Sporting News. Hamilton spoke at a press conference Wednesday and said timing is everything with the new hire to replace Lane Kiffin, who left Tuesday to take the USC job.

Hamilton wants a coach in place by Sunday—the first day coaches can leave campus to recruit following a “quiet period”—as the state of Tennessee’s potential top-five class is tenuous at best.
