There are multiple reports tonight that USC is talking seriously with Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio about taking over as head coach for the departed Pete Carroll.
That might soothe the nerves of UW fans who may be a little anxious hearing a couple of other reports today that the Trojans could try again to make a run at UW’s Steve Sarkisian. As I wrote earlier today, UW AD Scott Woodward didn’t rule out that could happen but said he was confident Sarkisian would stay — and said that no contact had happened yet.
But none of that angst may be necessary if the reports about USC and Del Rio are true. Peter King of NBC and Sports Illustrated is reporting that Del Rio is placing calls to potential assistants. Jon Gold of the LA Daily News is also reporting that he hears it’s Del Rio along with defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta, who worked this year at Notre Dame.
And the SportsByBrooks blog has this look at the situation, reporting that Mike Garrett isn’t making the final decision, and that if anything happens with Del Rio it could happen as early as tomorrow.
This report from a Jacksonville TV station notes that Del Rio didn’t want to talk about USC tonight, while this story lays out Del Rio’s situation in Jacksonville, which is supposed to get some clarity tomorrow when he has a meeting with the team’s owner.
