New Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly has recruits’ approval
Brian Kelly has been well received during his recruiting travels since being named head football coach at Notre Dame last month.
“I’ve been to the east coast and the west coast and contrary to analysts saying Notre Dame football is no longer relevant I can tell you kids still know all about Notre Dame’s tradition,” Kelly said. “I’ve been well received and it’s from the weight of the academics, the graduation rate and the tradition of the Notre Dame program.
“With the name Notre Dame I’ve been able to get in the race real quick. We have a chance to get one or two of the top guys. Sure, I have some name recognition with them, but it’s only from the last three years at Cincinnati. I have to tell them I’ve been doing this (coaching) for the last 20 years.”
Kelly won two Division II national titles at Grand Valley State, a Mid-American Conference championship at Central Michigan and two Big East titles in his three years at Cincinnati, which he guided to a 34-6 record, including 12-0 this season with a No. 3 ranking before his departure.
Notre Dame has a number of four-star recruits and is still in the hunt for the top two recruits in the nation — five-star players Seantral Henderson, a 6-foot-8, 301-pound offensive tackle from St. Paul and 6-5 receiver Kyle Prater of Hillside (Ill.).
