The year in review: Mixed memories
In Jackson, the biggest news story was Frank Melton, the city’s unorthodox mayor, preparing to defend himself against federal civil rights charges relating to a raid on a suspected drug house. At the same time, he was running for re-election.
Melton was one of the top stories this year as selected by The Clarion-Ledger’s news staff. Other top stories included the return of former University of Southern Mississippi star Brett Favre to the NFL, the death of ex-Alcorn State great Steve McNair, crop losses throughout the state, economic development in downtown Jackson, and Mississippians making a splash in Hollywood.
Back to Melton, though: His trial ended in a mistrial. Afterward, he said, “I’ve learned a great lesson.”
