LSU staff questions still unsettled
LSU coach Les Miles covered a wide range of topics Wednesday, putting to rest some lingering questions and setting the stage for his team’s New Year’s Day showdown with 11th-ranked Penn State.
The No. 13-ranked Tigers (9-3) went back to practice Monday for the Capital One Bowl showdown with the Nittany Lions (10-2) in Orlando, Fla.
The main piece of news from Miles’ post-practice media session was the still murky status of new assistant coaches Frank Wilson and Billy Gonzales.
Hired last week, neither man has participated in practice or preparation yet because of uncertainty whether either can do so right away under NCAA rules. Part of the uncertainty involves former running backs coach Larry Porter, now the Memphis head coach, and whether he can stick around to coach LSU in the bowl game.
Miles wants Porter to help with bowl preparation before he leaves. Wilson was hired to replace Porter and has recruited for LSU since then.
Gonzales was hired a few days later but hasn’t been able to do anything in an official capacity for the Tigers yet.
