As its officers were on the way to Tiger Woods’s estate to question him about his unusual one-car accident the morning before, the Florida Highway Patrol received a phone call. It was Mark Steinberg, the golfer’s longtime agent.
Mr. Steinberg, who was handpicked 12 years ago by Mr. Woods to be the de facto chief executive of his golf and endorsement empire, did what some people who know him say they would have expected him to do: He told them his client wouldn’t be talking.
