Gerhart, McCoy become Heisman leaders

A couple of extraordinary performances and a few disappointing ones seem to have turned the Heisman Trophy competition into a two-horse race.

And it’s not surprising that a Colt and a workhorse are leading the field after last week’s games.

Texas quarterback Colt McCoy and Stanford running back Toby Gerhart each closed the regular season with Heisman-worthy showings that should set them apart from the other candidates.

McCoy, last year’s runner-up, had a brilliant Thanksgiving Day performance in a 49-39 victory over rival Texas A&M. That effort moved his coach and top receiver to openly campaign for him.

“I think he made a statement that he’s the best out there,” Texas wide receiver Jordan Shipley said. “And with the amount of pressure he’s been under and to be leading an undefeated team and perform like this, it shows he’s the best.”

Added Texas coach Mack Brown: “I don’t get a vote, but I would have voted for Vince [Young in 2005] and I would have voted for Colt last year. But everyone who likes college football was watching, and if someone has a better Heisman moment than that, I’d like to see it.”

You wonder if Brown was able to watch Stanford face Notre Dame on Saturday night. Although McCoy clearly is a deserving Heisman candidate, Stanford workhorse Toby Gerhart made quite a statement, too.
