Will Florida State’s Bobby Bowden make last appearance in Gainesville?
GAINESVILLE — Saturday’s Florida-Florida State clash will be the final game in The Swamp for a long list of big names, and that could include FSU coach Bobby Bowden.
The Seminoles (6-5, 4-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) have struggled this season, leading to calls for the 80-year-old Bowden to resign as coach.
It’s unlikely that Bowden will be at the helm when the Noles return to Gainesville in 2011, so Saturday could be his last appearance at UF.
The importance of that isn’t lost on Florida coach Urban Meyer, who doesn’t expect to see coaches duplicate the success Bowden (388 wins) and Penn State’s Joe Paterno (393 wins) have had.
“What they’ve accomplished, that won’t be touched,” Meyer said. “I personally have great admiration for both of those guys because they do it the right way, they’re class individuals and they truly love their players.
“The significance of what those two have done for the game of football, enjoy it because you’ll never see anything close to that again.”
