Personnel Points: Rebel rise

Three of the more impressive performances I saw over the weekend took place in the SEC.

Getty ImagesSmall in stature, but large in stock evaluation.

On the offensive side of the ball, you had Mississippi’s electrifying senior, Dexter McCluster, totaling 324 all-purpose yards. Although listed as a wide receiver, he did the majority of his damage against Tennessee after taking the handoff. McCluster carried it 25 times for 282 yards and four touchdowns. And although he hadn’t carried the football more than 15 times in any game during his first three years with the program, Saturday marked the third time in four games he’s racked up 20 or more carries. At just 5-foot-8 and 169 pounds (and prone to injury early in his career), the obvious concern is keeping him in one piece.

That said, there are plenty of cases, from Dante Hall to Darren Sproles, in which guys of McCluster’s size can do well in the NFL. At the next level, I see him as a jack-of-all-trades type.
