Cook Report puts Childers, Nunnelee race as a toss up

Today, the nonpartisan political handicappers at the Cook Political Report changed their assessment of Mississippi’s 1st District race from “Lean Democrat” to “Toss-Up” – placing Childers among the 10 most vulnerable incumbents of either party.

House editor David Wasserman cites GOP state Sen. Alan Nunnelee’s impressive debut fundraising haul, his geographic profile and the strong conservative nature of the district as reasons for the rating change.

“…Nunnelee isn’t the city slicker that unsuccessful 2008 nominee Greg Davis was, and that should help him take advantage of this district’s deep conservatism and aversion to President Obama. Nunnelee’s $220,000 haul in his first quarter of fundraising ensures this will be a top race.”
