Statement game looms for Eagles
HATTIESBURG – Houston’s victory over then No. 5-ranked Oklahoma State on Sept. 12 was a big deal for Conference USA, putting the Cougars in the conversation as a possible party crasher for the BCS bowl system.
Saturday’s game at No. 20 Kansas affords Southern Miss a similar opportunity. Following a 3-0 start that includes a win over ACC member Virginia, the Golden Eagles haven’t been mentioned yet as potential BCS-busters.
But USM defensive lineman Terrance Pope might have put it best last Saturday after the Eagles clawed back from a 17-point deficit to beat UVA 37-34.
“This is going to be the money game,” Pope said.
