UPDATE: Weis Well Aware Of MSU Streak
SOUTH BEND – Charlie Weis was a tight ends coach with the New England Patriots, Ron Powlus a Notre Dame phenom-in-waiting with a broken collarbone, and Michael Floyd a toddler two months shy of his fourth birthday.
That’s how long it’s been since Notre Dame beat Michigan State in a football game at Notre Dame Stadium – Sept. 18, 1993.
It’s hardly a drought of Chicago Cub-esque proportions, but the six successive losses to the Spartans at home already constitute a dubious piece of ND history. It’s the longest home winning streak to any single opponent.
Weis, now the fifth-year head coach of the Irish (1-1), decided to teach history this week instead of ignoring it, with the Spartans (1-1) set to visit again Saturday.
Powlus, currently ND’s quarterbacks coach, and sophomore receiver Floyd, No. 2 nationally in receiving yards per game (160.0), hope to offer Weis a hand in altering history.
