Fifth-ranked Rebels wrestle with September schedule that’s been anything but familiar

OXFORD — Ole Miss defensive end Kentrell Lockett admits that he and most of his teammates are more comfortable with a routine. That’s why this September – when Sundays and Thursdays are the new Saturday – has been a tough adjustment.

“It’s real weird,” Lockett said. “We’re all creatures of habit.”

But a real routine has been impossible to maintain during the past few weeks because of a strange schedule that includes only one traditional Saturday game – this weekend’s home opener against Southeastern Louisiana at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

UM’s season opener was on a Sunday against Memphis and then came an early bye week. Now the No. 5-ranked Rebels will prepare for Saturday’s game against Southeastern Louisiana with the realization they have to turn around in just five days to play South Carolina on the road in the team’s Southeastern Conference debut on Sept. 24 – a Thursday night game televised on ESPN2.
