Wicker, Cochran oppose ACORN

Mississippi Republican Sens. Roger Wicker and Thad Cochran are among congressional GOP members supporting a measure to cut off federal funding to an advocacy group under fire in several voter-registration fraud cases.

The Senate voted 83-7 Monday to block the Housing and Urban Development Department from giving grants to ACORN, which stands for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, following a measure introduced by Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb.

The Nebraska lawmaker said the organization has received $53 million in taxpayer funds since 1994.

“This is a win for taxpayers who don’t want our tax dollars being funneled to organizations who have no respect for our rule of law,” Wicker said in a statement.
