Defense key for offensive-minded Southern Miss
HATTIESBURG — Southern Mississippi may have sputtered on offense for a good portion of Saturday’s 26-19 Conference USA victory over Central Florida, but the Golden Eagles were never in jeopardy of losing the football game thanks to the solid performance of their defensive unit.
Southern Miss’ defense scored the first touchdown on outside linebacker Martez Smith’s 22-yard fumble return in the first quarter and held Central Florida’s offense in check the majority of the night with the exception of two scoring drives in the second period.
