GOVERNOR BARBOUR TO APPEAR TUESDAY ON LIVE MPB BROADCAST Special Program
Will Focus on State Budget, Feature Calls From Viewers
Jackson, Mississippi – Governor Haley Barbour will comment on budget cuts
and state spending and respond to questions from viewers and listeners in a
special program scheduled to air live on Tuesday, September 15, 2009, on
Mississippi Public Broadcasting’s television and radio networks.
The program, “Mississippi Talks with Governor Barbour: State Budget Cuts,”
is scheduled from 6:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. on the statewide MPB systems. Governor
Barbour will take questions on the budget cuts from the viewing and
listening audience. Questions may be e-mailed or phoned in on the night of
the broadcast; the e-mail address will be MississippiTalks@mpbonline.org and
the phone number is 1-877-405-5247.
On September 3, Governor Barbour ordered cuts to state agency spending
totaling $171.9 million after 12 consecutive months of revenue collections
that were lower than expectations, including the first two months of Fiscal
Year 2010. The action was necessary to meet the constitutional requirements
of a balanced budget in FY 2010 and to try to avoid deeper and more painful
cuts later in the year as state revenue collections are expected to continue
to languish.
