City councilman wants street named after Frank Melton

A Jackson councilman wants to memorialize Frank Nelton by naming a street after him.

Kenny Stokes wants to change the name of Pascagoula Street from I-55 to the Metro Parkway to Frank Melton Drive.

Stokes formally made the proposal Friday morning during a news conference in the city council chamber. The Ward 3 councilman said Melton made some mistakes, but his heart was always in the right place. He says the street that goes past so many government buildings should carry the name of the former mayor.

“The convention center, the police department, the side of city hall, the county court house. There are just so many public entities are on it. The progress of the city, we want to make sure that we don’t forget this man and what he tried to do for the city,” Councilman Stokes said.
