Tennessee’s depth chart for the season opener looks like a recruiting poster. In fact, maybe it is.
Want to play as a freshman? Then, UT is the place to be.
At least, that’s what the depth chart reflects. Eight true freshmen are listed as first or second team on the depth chart for next Saturday’s season opener against Western Kentucky.
“Coach (Lane) Kiffin said he was gonna give all the freshmen a chance,” said freshman Nu’Keese Richardson, who is listed as a starter at both wide receiver and punt returner. “I believe every word of it.”
Freshman Bryce Brown, who has had an outstanding camp, is bracketed with senior Montario Hardesty as the starting running back. Freshman David Oku is listed as the third running back, ahead of sophomore Tauren Poole. Oku also will join Dennis Rogan on kickoff returns.
There are bigger surprises elsewhere on the depth chart.
Sophomore Prentiss Waggner has been competing with Rogan for the starting free safety position throughout preseason camp. But on the depth chart for the season opener, Waggner is bracketed as the backup strong safety with freshman Darren Myles. Freshman Janzen Jackson is bracketed with Rogan as the starting free safety.
Kiffin said Jackson came on strong at the end of camp. He also made a big impression in the third scrimmage, Aug. 22, according to Kiffin.
