Mississippi Coast may have gubernatorial candidate
Populous South Mississippi is always fertile ground for votes and hopefuls for 2011 gubernatorial elections have started popping up in Biloxi, Wiggins and points south of Hattiesburg. One even lives on the Coast, the first serious gubernatorial contender from this region in recent history.
Since the Neshoba County Fair last month, talk about the governor’s race has heated up and those interested in running are already working. Marty Wiseman, executive director of the John C. Stennis Institute of Government at Mississippi State University, said that with a strong incumbent, Gov. Haley Barbour, leaving office because of term limits, many who have been thinking about running for years might make a go of it this time.
Josh Gregory, a political consultant with Frontier Strategies, who does work for current Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant and U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper, said South Mississippi should be a priority for those with aspirations of sleeping in the governor’s mansion.
