Tax-free weekend begins Friday

Jackson County parents can shop for children’s school clothes and footwear tax free beginning Friday.

The 48-hour statewide tax break, passed by this year’s Legislature, waives the 7 percent sales tax on specific items less than $100. The event is the first of its kind for Mississippi.

The window of opportunity is 12:01 a.m. Friday through

12:01 a.m. Sunday.

Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant said, “I stated from the beginning of the 2009 session that I believed the best way to boost economic growth in a recession is by targeted tax cuts.”

The tax break is not limited to children’s attire, although the timing coincides with the back-to-school season.

The Mississippi State Tax Commission’s Web site www.mstc.state.ms.us offers a list of eligible and noneligible items, but basically the savings will be on pants, shorts, shirts, dresses, coats, jackets, belts, hats, undergarments and sleep attire.
