SALTER – Most 2009 Neshoba speeches are all about 2011 races

Most 2009 Neshoba speeches are all about 2011 races

Both Harper and Wicker were cool, collected and at ease with their conversations focused on their present work on Capitol Hill. Just as the trees, light poles and other fairgrounds vantage points are clear of political signage this week, incumbent public officials are clear of the stress of active campaigns.

I’ve seen both Harper and Wicker working the fairgrounds during election years — drenched in sweat, flushed of face and leg weary. Not this year.

Harper and Wicker made weekend visits before returning to Washington.

The 2009 Neshoba County Fair began July 24 and runs through July 31 with political speaking scheduled Wednesday and Thursday. But the 2009 version will feature only seven of the state’s eight statewide elected officials and a sprinkling of Neshoba County state legislators and judicial officials.

Mississippi’s next statewide general election is still two years away in 2011. Congressional elections are a year away in 2010. There are no judicial elections this year.
