Miss. energy group unanimously against the federal climate change bill
The Mississippi Energy Policy Institute held its first meeting Monday and Gov. Haley Barbour says the group’s membership stands almost unanimously against the federal climate change bill winding through Congress.
The institute was created last month and has about 125 members, including representatives from Mississippi Power Co. ( MPPRB – news – people ) and Chevron ( CVX – news – people ) Corp. and from state universities and other industry groups.
During its meeting at the Jackson Convention Center, the group took a survey that included a question about the climate change bill.
Barbour said 96 percent of the institute members said the cap and trade tax and renewable energy standards in the bill are not in the best interest of Mississippi’s economy.
