Johnson’s 2nd time has much promise
Johnson inherits severe budget problems, a recession and some of the vexing issues that dogged him the first time around – crime, infrastructure, business flight, school issues. But, he also inherits booming downtown development and a new, strengthened, involved, diverse business leadership.
Last week, a post-election fundraiser was held, bringing together much of that leadership, including many who had not been in Johnson’s camp. Those who attended were impressed with the atmosphere of diversity and unity, even among former political competitors. That is encouraging. Most encouraging appears to be Johnson’s willingness to embrace it. That would indicate that he really is listening.
Jackson’s problems are no different from other cities’. The difference in Jackson has been lack of leadership that brings together diverse interests to solve problems and seek common goals.
Johnson has an opportunity to bring together those interests on his terms. If he does, it will be a comeback not only for him politically but for the city.
