House Approves Childers’ Appropriations Requests
Washington, DC – The U.S. House of Representatives last night approved two of the appropriations requests submitted by Congressman Travis Childers (D-MS) in April to benefit important projects in North Mississippi. Through its passage of the Commerce, Justice, and Science Subcommittee’s Appropriations bill, the House authorized $800,000 for two University of Mississippi projects that will help provide a skilled workforce in both science and law.
“Economic development in Mississippi largely depends on the existence of a skilled, well-trained workforce, and these important funds will help provide the education and training students and professionals need to succeed in today’s competitive environment,” said Congressman Childers. “The funded projects will also promote justice and advance scientific innovation at one of our state’s top educational institutions. I will continue to do everything I can to see that this funding is included in the final legislation and ensure that North Mississippi gets its fair share.”
Below are descriptions of the funding requests approved by the House:
$600,000 – National Center for Justice and the Rule of Law, University of Mississippi School of Law. The Center for Justice focuses on issues relating to the criminal justice system that are unique and address concerns of national interest. It provides legal training for judges, prosecutors, lawyers, law students and develops model programs and publications for wide distribution.
$200,000 – Innovative STEM Education, University of Mississippi. Funds are requested to implement a cohesive approach to recruiting students to careers in science and science education and to develop innovative strategies that will transform STEM education in the State of Mississippi, which has a high demand for recruiting and subsequently training individuals who wish to pursue careers in the above mentioned specialties.
