Melick: It’s time UA president called an athletic department intervention

It’s time to admit it. The University of Alabama has a problem.

It’s time for an intervention, time for somebody — university President Robert Witt, perhaps — to bring the entire athletics family into a room and say, “This has got to stop.”
Once again, Alabama is going on NCAA probation. The program that was “staring down the barrel of a gun” — one of the enduring phrases from this program’s previous collision with the NCAA Committee on Infractions — finds itself guilty of NCAA violations for the fourth time in 14 years.
Oh, Alabama officials thought they had put probation behind them. Remember the news releases of February 2007, when they were practically begging for positive publicity when they thought the school was finally free and clear of the taint of NCAA scandal, that the “repeat offender status” window of probation had been successfully closed?
